CMAs (AAMA) are required to recertify every 5 years. Recertification may be obtained through re-examination or through collecting Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
Dozens of Continuing Education Units are available at the annual AAMA (national) conventions, at the annual state conventions, at local chapter meetings and at the annual leadership retreat. Other sources of CEUs are through the AAMA magazine, the "CMA Today" and other publications
AAMA/WSSMA members are eligible for free or reduced rates for many educational activities sponsored by the AAMA at the national, state, and local levels.
Educational opportunities also exist for "non-AAMA sponsored" activities. These non-AAMA sponsored activities are eligible to be counted as your Continuing Education even if they are referred to as "PDUs", "CMEs", or some other acronym.
How are non-AAMA Sponsored CEUS documented?
Formal documentation demonstrating that credit was earned must be submitted for each activity, and must include the following:
1. Applicants name 2. Date the credit was earned 3. Non-AAMA sponsor name 4. Subject matter of educational activity. Course titles are not sufficient documentation. Applications must attach the syllabus, content outline or course description for each activity
For complete information and a Recertification Application, see the AAMA Website.
How are CEU offerings sponsored through the AAMA?
Only authorized AAMA program planners may apply for CEU approval for educational offerings. Authorized AAMA Program Planners are issued Provider Numbers which must be included on the AAMA Program Approval Form.
The AAMA Program Approval Form requests such information as the sponsoring chapter or state, the provider number, the program information, such as program title, length and dates. A Description of the program and learning objectives are also required. The speaker's name, credentials, and qualifications are also necessary on the form.
Three categories of CEUs are available through WSSMA; Clinical, Administrative, and General/Transdisciplinary. Within each of those areas, many types of CEUs are offered. WSSMA offers a variety of CEUs at the annual state convention held each May and at the Leadership Retreat in March of each year. Check the WSSMA Annual Conference for more information on specific continuing education opportunities.
Clinical: Fundamental Principles Diagnostic Orders Patient Care
Administrative: Administrative Procedures Practice Finance
General/Transdisciplinary: Professionalism Communication Skills Legal Concepts Instruction Operational Functions
What types of CEUs are available through the local county chapters?
Local county chapters should offer a wide range of continuing education through their monthly educational meetings and seminars/workshops. Check your Local Chapter for more information on specific continuing education opportunities.
