Annual dues include membership in a tri-level organization; national (American Association of Medical Assistants - AAMA), state society (WSSMA), and your local chapter affiliate.
Types of membership
Active - an AAMA Certified Medical Assistant (CMA (AAMA)) or; anyone who was an active member on 12/31/87 and who has maintained continuous active membership.
Associate - an Associate Members shall be a Medical Assistant who is not yet an AAMA Certified Medical Assistant (CMA (AAMA)) and who does not fall under any other category.
Student - A student member:
Shall be enrolled in Medical Assisting Program when initially joining for the first time.
Shall carry a minimum of six (6) contact hours per week per term enrolled.
May retain membership for one additional dues year after graduation if Active/Associate membership is not chosen.
Shall be limited to a maximum of Three (3) years as a Student member.
Sustaining - Anyone who has been an Active or Associate member for at least two years, who has retired from medical assisting.
Affiliate - An Affiliate member is one who is not eligible for another category but who is interested in the profession of Medical Assisting.
Member at Large - Is one who meets the qualifications of membership, but has no component chapter existing in the area of residence.
Dues
In Washington State, Active Member dues are $86.50, and Student Member dues are $32.50, yearly. Membership dues vary by state. For dues information in other states, call the AAMA at 1-800-ACT-AAMS (1-800-228-2262).

New members joining for the first time, as of September 1, receive bonus months on the length of their membership - if you join September 1, your membership will be active through December 31 of the following year!
